Peasant Girl on Bonhams London sale on 20 March at 2pm

Wald produced many individualised commissioned portraits, but the current lot, 'Peasant Girl' (Russian Girl), is an evocation of an idealised 'heroic' female worker-type: a materialisation of the artist's memories of his early training in Budapest when his teachers there were responding to the ideological demands of Hungary's post-war communist regime. by Louis Wald - 18/03/2013

Jewish Affairs - Pesach 2012

Jewish Affairs - Pesach 2012 edition devotes the cover and 9 pages to Herman Wald. The editor's description is as follows: The Pesach 2012 issue includes a special focus on South African Jewish artists. Two articles, by Ute Ben Yosef and Natalie Knight, discuss the life and work of Herman Wald, a post-war sculptor perhaps best known for his design of the Martyr’s Monument in Johannesburg’s West Park Jewish Cemetery. Wald’s work has been unjustly neglected since his death, and these essays help to redress this.by Louis Wald - 05/04/2012

Unknown Miner Unveiled on Wednesday - Happy birthday, Wits is 90 years

See this article from the Sowetan. Delighted that this newly erected Herman Wald cast is being associated with Wit's 90th birthday. This was a substantial event, dancers, mining hard hats, and lots of people. Interesting to note significance of the miner to many speakers.by Louis Wald - 31/03/2012

Star newspaper article on new Wits sculptures

Star reporter Omphitlhetse Mooki and photographer Dumisani Sibeko met me on site for about two hours on 19 November. See the resulting online version of the article here. See a copy of the print version below. I was perhaps a bit over exuberant but did not seem to embarrass my self too badly. Ms Mooki's take on the Miner's pose was interesting. "Could be a Victory gesture. On the other hand Surrender works as well." by Louis Wald - 21/12/2011
